Paul killer Kilderry Interview

Paul Kilderry has been on the road as a Professional player for “ever” it seems.  Hitting the tour early Paul played his way into the upper echelons of Professional tennis and with strong singles performances and a swag of doubles titles he decided to turn his hand to coaching in the pro ranks.  He happened to be home when I interviewed his father so I was presented with the perfect opportunity.

TTC How much are you playing these days?

PK Very little, as little as possible, maybe once a week.

TTC What’s the “vibe” on the tour and is it as much fun as the early nineties?

PK It is a lot more serious these days, every year more and more great players come along, so for the top players to stay on top they must remain %100 focussed on tennis.

TTC   Is the trend to specialise (i.e. just playing on one surface)?

PK I think it was five years ago but it seems that a lot of clay court players are now trying to improve their games on quicker surfaces.

TTC Who’s the smart money on into the near future?

PK  I think its hard to look past Hewitt for the next couple of years.

TTC  There has been a lot of talk about the schedule and Davis Cup.  Do these issues affect the vast majority of players?

PK  It affects all the top guys. The ATP have shortened the season which is much better for the players. Not all players put Davis Cup at a high priority but I believe it is a very traditional and great part of the game.

TTC  What are the issues players are talking about (not including girls!).

PK  Over the last couple of years there has been a lot of talk about doubles and trying to push doubles specialist out of the game.  Also next year will see prize money split more for the singles players.

TTC  What ranking does a Pro have to achieve in order to make $100 Gs (after expenses)?

PK  I would guess top 100 in singles and top 50 in doubles.

TTC  What’s next for you?

TTC  I am looking at getting into public relations or marketing in sports.

The Tennis Coach wishes to thank Paul for making himself available and we wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours.
