The Serve-N-Volley / Short Ball Put Away Board

By Brad Properjohn

Work on your "short ball put a way's" or your "serve and volley" routines by investing in a Rebound Board. All you need is a large board about 1.5 meters high by 2.0 meters long and thick enough to withstand some heavy pounding hits. My board is 2 cm thick and has a reinforcing frame around the boarders and also across the back.. I lean it against a solid seat and the angle is adjusted for the required results by testing and dead reckoning.

The angle of the returning shot (left or right) in relation to the incoming player can be adjusted. The angle differential of the incoming ball will have enough effect on the returning ball to allow you to almost simulate the spontaneity of a tennis point. The rebound Board is a simple idea but they are hard to find in the market place.

I also use my board when teaching intercepting crosses in doubles. For example, often there is a tendency for players to be to relaxed, thinking the interception shot is an automatic point (especially when there is nobody standing there offering resistance) and consequently they don't put enough heat on the shot. By placing a board (standing up right) in the opponents position you can better simulate the cross.

When the rebound board is covering an area of the net it often causes an unexpected shot like a reflex volley or a drop shot for the deep rallyer and that is great explosive and reaction training.
